What is Reiki?

A  gentle yet powerful form of energy healing

Reiki is a Japanese healing practice that supports relaxation, balance and overall wellbeing.

The word Reiki combines two Japanese words:

Rei – Universal

Ki – Life force energy

Together, Reiki can be understood as Universal Life Force Energy – the natural energy believed to flow through all living things.

Developed in Japan by Dr Mikao Usui in the early 1900s, Reiki is now practised throughout the world in hospitals, hospices, complementary therapy clinics and private practices as a gentle, non-invasive complementary therapy.

During a Reiki treatment, the practitioner places their hands lightly on or just above the body, allowing Reiki energy to flow where it is needed.

Rather than treating symptoms alone, Reiki aims to support the whole person – helping to restore balance within the body, mind and spirit.

Many people experience a profound sense of calm and relaxation during a session. Others describe feelings of warmth, tingling, deep peace or emotional release. Every experience is unique.

Reiki is not intended to replace conventional medical care but can work alongside it, supporting your body's natural ability to heal and restore balance.

How Does Reiki Work?

People seek Reiki for many different reasons, including:

  • Stress and anxiety

  • Emotional wellbeing

  • Relaxation

  • Feeling overwhelmed

  • Improving sleep

  • Supporting wellbeing alongside medical treatment

  • Personal growth

  • Simply taking time to reconnect with themselves

No previous experience is needed. Reiki is suitable for people of all ages.

Is Reiki Suitable for Everyone?

Common Questions About Reiki

No. Reiki is not a religion and does not require any particular faith or belief system. It is a gentle, yet powerful complementary therapy developed in Japan that focuses on supporting relaxation, balance and overall wellbeing. People from all backgrounds and beliefs choose to experience Reiki.

No. You don't need to have any prior experience or beliefs to receive Reiki. Many people simply come with an open mind and a willingness to relax. Every person's experience is unique, but many report feeling deeply relaxed, calmer and more balanced after a session.

Reiki is a complementary therapy that supports the whole person rather than treating specific medical conditions. Many people choose Reiki to help manage stress, anxiety, emotional wellbeing, sleep difficulties, chronic pain, fatigue and the challenges associated with long-term health conditions.

While Reiki is not a substitute for medical diagnosis or treatment, it can be used alongside conventional healthcare to support relaxation, resilience and overall wellbeing.

Every person is different, and individual experiences and outcomes will vary.

There is no set number of sessions, as every person and every situation is unique.

Some people feel that a single session provides exactly what they need, while others choose to return regularly as part of their wellbeing routine.

If you're seeking support with a longer-term issue, a series of sessions may be beneficial.

The choice is always yours, and there is never any pressure to book additional sessions.
